As a foremost example, Streets of Rage Remake is a fan game that faithfully recreated the Streets of Rage series into a single game on the PC it was quashed by SEGA within a week of release. Even so these decisions can be reversed, fan games can be given some degree of sanction, and in practice any program is essentially impossible to remove from the Internet once it gets out into the wild. As they are by definition unlicensed products based on existing IPs, it is hardly surprising that the law would be on the side of publishers who wish to stop their release. They also often run afoul of legal issues. They have the adorable starters down pat!

They’re also typically limited to the PC scene thanks to the ease of distribution and prohibitively expensive console licensing fees. We can see this demonstrated well by the fact Pokemon Uranium took nine years to reach 1.0 it is simply a vast undertaking for a team of volunteers, no matter how dedicated. Though they do share similarities with modding in that they are non-professional content, fan games tend to be a level above those in terms of effort required to make them. In any event it has caused me to think about the phenomenon of fan games and their place in the industry, and I’d be very interested to hear what any of you think about them, or about any particular ones.įan games are, if you’re unfamiliar, the equivalent of fanfiction a game, made by fans, that usually serves to expand or build on a particular game or setting, although some are efforts at precise cloning, perhaps on different hardware. Other extras include an image and movie gallery, a cheat screen, several unlockable secrets and four different endings depending on the path chosen. If you keep up with the relevant scene, you may be aware that a Pokemon fan game, known as Pokemon Uranium, was released a few days ago. The game contains 43 locations with multiple splits and 52 different enemies. The game can be tweaked with a color editor for characters (unlockable), and various options such as team damage, combo and jump type (both were changed in SoR3), kill type, weapon usage, a time limit, difficulty level, and number of lives. Attacks can be combined into combos, with more than 20 moves per character. There's a button to attack, another to jump, a third to launch a special attack that consumes health, and a final one to have the entire screen bombarded by police reinforcements. Most of the moves will be familiar to you, although many new ones have been added as well. The story is told through still images with dialogue. There are six characters available, from the three series combined: Axel, Blaze, Skate, Max, Zan and Adam, and two secret unlockable characters. Three other game modes can be unlocked later on: Survival (fight endless enemies until you run out of health), Flag (hold a single flag for as long as possible) and Volleyball. There is also a battle mode for one-on-one duels. Some moves are only possible when two players work together. You can tackle the story mode alone, with the help of a CPU player, or cooperatively with another human player. Zan suspects that Barbon's bar is a front for illegal arms trafficking, and the team begins their investigation there. Unable to face it alone, he contacts Blaze, who gathers all the help available to deal with this new threat. Zan discovers a new criminal organization planning to take over the city. The story picks up one year after Streets of Rage 3. In addition to familiar locations and enemies, there are also new moves, characters and backgrounds, more colors, different scrolling layers and 34 original music themes remixed for this version. This side-scrolling fighting game borrows material and sprites from the original three games to offer a completely new gameplay.
